The 24th World Scout Jamboree took place at the Summit Bechtel Family Scout Reserve July 23 – August 1, 2019. More than 45,000 Scouts and adult leaders from 145 countries around the world attended, camping at the Summit and taking part in activities ranging from aquatics, orienteering, shooting sports and zip line adventures to learning experiences focused on economics, government, transportation and various STEM topics. During the event, the MEC Scouting Subcommittee presented an exhibit “Mining: Journey to the Middle of Your Mobile” as part of the larger Jamboree program, “Living in the 21st Century – Exploration.”
This outreach was successful in engaging Scouts from all over the world and introducing them to mining and the importance of minerals in daily life and safety aspects of the industry. Sponsored by the SME WAAIME division, CONSOL Energy, Murray Energy, Caterpillar Inc., Coronado Coal, King's Tire Service and the SME sections in Minnesota and Pennsylvania, the exhibit welcomed nearly 2,400 participants over the course of the event. Almost 2,100 of those participants who completed the full exhibit received an embroidered commemorative patch, and all visitors to the exhibit received a pin resembling the BSA’s “Mining in Society” merit badge. A 12-foot mining haul truck tire served as a highly-visible landmark outside the exhibit.
The MEC Scouting Subcommittee is also working on fundraising plans to ensure that outreach to Scouting groups will continue into the future, and have helped garner several donations this year. MEC continues offering a webpage with extensive information about the Mining in Society merit badge at https://MineralsEducationCoalition.org/Scouts, and BSA staff recently expressed their appreciation of the site.
MEC continues to support Scouting and MiSmb year round through the Mining in Society merit badge web page. On that page you can learn all your need to know about becoming a Mining in Society merit badge counselor. Then, by completing the Roll Call form, you will be added to our mailing list for MiS merit badge counselors for future communications regarding the merit badge, support materials and your role as a counselor.
